Why us

Why Parents Choose Richmond for A Level Biology Tutoring

Three things we do differently across Year 12 and Year 13.

An A-Level biology plan built around your child, not a template

We begin with your child’s exam board, year group and the papers they will sit. Then we find what is actually holding them back — a topic like respiration or genetics, the longer written answers, or the data and practical questions — and shape their A-Level biology tuition around that. It is never a one-size-fits-all approach.

We Make A-Level Biology Click

From biological molecules and cells to respiration, photosynthesis, genetics and the control of gene expression, we make difficult A-Level biology easier to picture and remember. Students learn why the biology works, then practise using it in exam questions.

Understanding that shows up on results day

Once the biology makes sense, we take it into real questions from your child’s own board: unfamiliar experiments, data and statistics, and extended written answers. That is where understanding turns into marks.

When to get help

When Does a Student Need an A-Level Biology Tutor?

Most parents do not arrive looking for an A-Level biology tutor. They arrive with a sentence about their child. These are the ones we hear most.

She got a 9 in GCSE biology and is suddenly on a D.

The GCSE to A-Level jump

A-Level biology goes down to the molecules, and the mark schemes expect precise language in a precise order. Revising the way that worked at GCSE stops working in the first term. We rebuild how your child learns and writes biology, before it costs a predicted grade.

He knows all the content but the marks do not follow.

Written answers

Biology marks go to explanations that are complete, ordered and use the right terms — and the longer questions are worth the most. We practise writing them against your board’s own mark schemes until the structure is automatic.

Respiration and photosynthesis make no sense to her.

The biochemistry

Respiration and photosynthesis are where many students stop being able to follow what is happening. We teach them as a story of energy and electrons, one stage at a time, so the details have something to hang on.

He loses marks on every data question.

Data, statistics and practicals

At least 10% of the marks use maths, including statistical tests, and many questions are set on an experiment the student has never seen. We practise reading the data, choosing the test and evaluating the method.

She dreads the essay.

The AQA essay

AQA Paper 3 ends with a 25-mark essay, one of two titles, that rewards linking topics from across the whole course. We practise planning it from Year 12, so it is a strength by the summer rather than a gamble.

Her predicted grade is below the offer she wants.

Predicted grades and offers

Predictions come from Year 12 work and school mocks, so that is where the effort has to go. We find what is costing the marks and time the work around when the prediction is actually made.

He needs an A* for his medicine offer.

Working to an A or A*

Top grades are won on the unfamiliar contexts, the synoptic questions and precise writing under time, not on the topics a student already finds hard. That is a different plan from catching up, and we build it differently.

Who we teach

A Level Biology Tutoring by Exam Board

We teach the main UK A-Level biology specifications: AQA, OCR A, OCR B (Advancing Biology) and Pearson Edexcel Biology A and B. Lessons work from your child’s own board’s past papers and mark schemes.

Edexcel A-Level Biology Tutor

Edexcel A-Level Biology tutoring for Biology A (9BN0) and Biology B (9BI0)

We provide Edexcel A-Level biology tutor online, 1:1, for Year 12 and Year 13 UK students on Biology A or Biology B.

What your child is taught

Pearson Edexcel sets two different A-Level biology courses. Biology A, Salters-Nuffield (9BN0), teaches through contexts such as Lifestyle, Health and Risk and Run for your Life, and a scientific article is released eight weeks before Paper 3, with one section of the paper set on it. Biology B (9BI0) is content-led: two papers of an hour and three quarters, and a two-and-a-half-hour Paper 3 worth 40% of the grade.

Check the code on a mock paper, because past papers for one do not match the other. Your Edexcel A-Level biology tutor then plans around what your child needs, from Edexcel’s own papers and mark schemes.

Where we spend the time

On Biology A, the pre-release article is worth reading properly and early. On Biology B, Paper 3 can ask about anything. We prepare for whichever your child sits from Year 12.

AQA A-Level Biology Tutor

AQA A-Level Biology tutoring for specification 7402

We provide AQA A-Level biology tutor online, 1:1, for Year 12 and Year 13 UK students.

What your child is taught

AQA sets three two-hour papers on specification 7402. Paper 1 covers the first four topics and includes a 15-mark extended response; Paper 2 covers the last four and includes a 15-mark comprehension question. Paper 3 can ask about anything: structured and practical questions, critical analysis of experimental data, and a 25-mark essay from a choice of two titles.

What your child needs from that is the first thing we work out. Your AQA A-Level biology tutor then builds the lessons around it, from AQA’s own past papers and mark schemes and the 12 required practicals.

Where we spend the time

The essay is 25 marks and rewards linking topics across the whole course. We practise planning it from Year 12, not in the last month.

OCR A-Level Biology Tutor

OCR Biology A tutoring for specification H420

We provide OCR A-Level biology tutor online, 1:1, for Year 12 and Year 13 UK students on OCR Biology A.

What your child is taught

OCR Biology A, specification H420, teaches biology across six modules. Biological processes and Biological diversity each open with 15 marks of multiple choice. The third paper, Unified biology, is shorter and deliberately mixes the modules together.

The first thing worth checking is that your child is on Biology A and not Biology B — the past papers are not interchangeable. After that your OCR A-Level biology tutor plans around what your child actually needs.

Where we spend the time

Unified biology punishes revising topics one at a time. We practise linking them — respiration in a question on exercise, genetics in one on evolution — from Year 12 onwards.

OCR Advancing Biology Tutor

OCR Biology B (Advancing Biology) tutoring for specification H422

We provide OCR Advancing Biology tutor online, 1:1, for Year 12 and Year 13 UK students on OCR Biology B.

What your child is taught

OCR Biology B, Advancing Biology (H422), introduces each idea in a real, contemporary setting, and any of its three papers can ask about any module. Before the Scientific literacy paper, OCR releases an advance notice article, and 20 to 25 marks of that paper are set on it.

OCR is withdrawing Biology B: students who started in September 2026 are the last to take it, with the final exams in summer 2028. If your child is on it, we teach it in full, from OCR’s own papers.

Where we spend the time

The advance notice article is worth real marks. We help your child understand it and practise applying the biology in it — without claiming to predict the questions.

A Level Biology Tutors for Year 12 and Year 13

Year 12 and Year 13 are different jobs. What a tutor works on changes between them.

A Level Biology Tutoring for Year 12

Year 12 is where most A-Level biology problems begin, usually in the first term. We make biological molecules and cells secure, build precise written answers in from the start, and practise the maths and practical skills early, because the rest of the course sits on them.

It also has to keep pace with school, because Year 12 tests and mocks are what most schools set predicted grades from.

  • Biological molecules, enzymes and cells
  • Exchange, transport and the immune system
  • Written answers in the order the mark scheme wants

A Level Biology Tutoring for Year 13

Year 13 brings the hardest content — respiration, photosynthesis, inheritance, populations and the control of gene expression — at the same time as UCAS, mocks and an offer grade. All of it, and all of Year 12, can come up in the final papers.

So A-Level biology exam preparation is the job: new topics taught alongside school, then timed past papers on your child’s own specification, with the lost marks fed straight into the next lesson.

  • Year 13 topics, taught before they pile up
  • Year 12 topics that were never quite secure
  • Timed past papers, marked and gone through
What the papers test

Biology, Maths and Practical Skills

Every A-Level biology paper tests three things at once. Sometimes a parent comes to us about one in particular. If that is you, your search ends here.

A-Level Biology Topics

Each board organises the content differently, but it is broadly shared. The focus is on:

  • Biological molecules and enzymes
  • Cells and the immune system
  • Exchange and transport
  • DNA, genes and protein synthesis
  • Variation, classification and biodiversity
  • Respiration and photosynthesis
  • Nervous and hormonal co-ordination
  • Homeostasis
  • Inheritance and evolution
  • Populations and ecosystems
  • Gene expression and gene technology

Maths for A-Level Biology

At least 10% of the marks need maths, and some of it is new at A-Level. The focus is on:

  • Percentages, ratios and rates
  • Magnification and scale
  • Rates from graphs and tangents
  • Standard deviation
  • Statistical tests such as chi-squared
  • The Hardy–Weinberg equation

A-Level Biology Practical Skills

Every paper asks about practical work, alongside a separate practical endorsement. The focus is on:

  • Planning an experiment and its variables
  • Microscopy and biological drawing
  • Recording and processing data
  • Choosing a statistical test
  • Evaluating a method
  • Questions on the required practicals
The bigger goal

A Level Biology for University Preparation

Many students take A-Level biology towards degrees in medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, biomedical science, biology and psychology. For several of those it is a required or preferred subject, and the grade is usually part of the offer.

Many of those courses also expect a Pass in the practical endorsement. If your child already has an offer, send us the requirements and we will build the preparation around them.

Getting started

How to start?

We have kept this deliberately simple: you get to test your A-Level biology tutor on a real lesson before you decide anything.

  1. 1
Two parents at the kitchen table on a video call, a phone propped up in front of them.
    Step one

    Tell us about your child

Fill in the form or send us a WhatsApp message. We arrange the free demo class and match your child with a specialist A-Level biology tutor.

  2. 2
A biology tutor beside a microscope and anatomical models, with a whiteboard of cell and organ diagrams behind.
    Step two

    Take the demo class

Take the free 45-minute lesson, and sit in if you want to. See how the lesson goes, ask us everything you want to ask, and only go ahead with A-Level biology lessons if you are convinced.

  3. 3

Questions

FAQs

What should parents look for in an A-Level biology tutor?

Five things worth checking, whoever you choose:

  • A-Level biology teaching experience, not just a biology degree
  • Experience of your child’s exam board and its papers
  • Confidence teaching the written answers and the statistics, not only the content
  • Lessons built on past papers and mark schemes, including practical questions
  • A way of tracking progress you can see between school assessments

Then ask for a trial lesson before you pay for anything. Whether your child will engage with a particular tutor is the one thing no website can tell you.

How much does an A-Level biology tutor cost?

Richmond Tutoring charges £36 for a 60-minute 1-to-1 A-Level biology lesson — the same as every other subject and level we teach. The first 45-minute lesson is free. There is no package to buy, no placement fee and no minimum term.

Is A-Level biology much harder than GCSE?

Yes, for most students it is a real step up, and often a surprise. The content goes down to the molecules, there is far more of it, and the mark schemes expect precise, ordered explanations applied to experiments students have not seen before. A strong GCSE grade does not guarantee an easy start, which is why the first term of Year 12 is when most families call.

Why does my child lose marks when they know the content?

Usually because the answer is not written the way the mark scheme rewards it. A-Level biology marks go to specific points in a logical order, with the right terms — and more and more of them go to applying the biology to unfamiliar data. We practise writing answers against real mark schemes, so knowledge turns into marks.

Can my child do A-Level biology after Combined Science?

Usually yes, if they meet the school’s entry grades. Combined Science covers the core biology, but students may start with gaps in depth and in the chemistry that A-Level biology leans on. The summer before Year 12, or the first term, is the best time to close them.

Can a tutor help with the practical endorsement?

With the skills behind it, yes: planning, recording and processing data, uncertainties and practical exam questions. The endorsement itself is assessed only by your child’s school, against the CPAC criteria, across at least 12 practical activities, and reported separately as Pass or Not Classified. We never write up or complete practical work.

How do you prepare students for the AQA biology essay?

By practising it from Year 12. The Paper 3 essay is worth 25 marks, and students choose one of two titles. It rewards accurate biology drawn from across the whole course and linked to the title, not a single topic written out at length. We teach students to plan quickly, choose the right topics and write to the marking guidance.

What is the difference between Edexcel Biology A and Biology B?

They are two different A-Levels. Biology A, Salters-Nuffield (9BN0), is taught through real-life contexts and has a scientific article released before Paper 3. Biology B (9BI0) is content-led, with a longer synoptic Paper 3 worth 40% of the grade. Past papers for one do not match the other, so check the code on a mock paper.

Can you help students retaking A-Level biology?

Yes. A-Level biology is linear, so a student retaking usually sits every paper again, not just the one that went badly. We start from the previous results and feedback, work on the papers and topics that lost the most marks, then move to full timed papers.

Is A-Level biology tuition available near me?

Yes. Every lesson is online and 1-to-1, so A-Level biology tuition is available wherever you are in the UK — there is no travel and nothing depends on how far you live from us.

Most of the families we teach are in and around south-west London, and we also teach students across the rest of the UK.
