Why us

Why Parents Choose Richmond for GCSE Biology Tutoring

What we do differently in biology, whether your child takes it separately or inside Combined Science.

A Biology plan built around your child

Biology at GCSE covers a lot of ground, and students often have very different gaps. We identify where your child is losing understanding or marks — whether that is cell biology, infection, genetics or ecology — then tailor lessons to their exam board, Foundation or Higher tier and current level.

Biology that actually makes sense

There is a lot to remember in GCSE Biology, but isolated facts are hard to hold on to. We help your child see how the ideas connect — how cells are adapted to their jobs, how substances move around the body, how genes affect characteristics and how ecosystems work. The aim is understanding that sticks.

Understanding that turns into marks

Knowing the facts does not always mean knowing how to answer the question. Your child needs to explain processes, link ideas, interpret data, describe required practicals and handle the longer six-mark questions. We practise these skills with real GCSE questions and mark schemes, so they learn what a strong Biology answer actually looks like.

Where we come in

What Does a GCSE Biology Tutor Help With?

Most parents do not arrive looking for a GCSE biology tutor. They arrive with a sentence about their child. These are the ones we hear most.

Her six-mark answers get two or three marks.

Longer written answers

The defining problem in biology. These questions are marked on whether the explanation is linked and complete, not on length. We work on structure: what the command word asks, which points earn marks, and saying them in the order the scheme expects.

He revises for hours and it does not go in.

Revision that does not work

Re-reading notes feels like revision and is the weakest form of it, which is why biology is the subject where effort and results most often come apart. We switch the work to recall and to answering questions, and show you what that looks like.

She did the practical in class but cannot answer questions on it.

Required practicals

The practical work is carried out at school; the exam tests understanding of the methods, observations, variables, data and conclusions. We go through each practical on your child’s specification exactly as the paper asks about it.

He is on a 5 and wants a 7 or better.

Moving up a grade band

At grades 4 to 6 the content is usually known and the marks are going on how it is written down. We work from a marked paper to find which question types cost marks. For grades 7 to 9 the work moves to precision, multi-step reasoning and the unfamiliar contexts the top questions are set in.

Who we teach

GCSE Biology Tutoring by Exam Board

We teach the three biology specifications used in most UK schools. Lessons work from your child’s own board’s past papers and mark schemes.

Edexcel GCSE Biology Tutor

Edexcel GCSE Biology tutoring for specification 1BI0

We provide Edexcel GCSE biology tutor online, 1:1, for Year 10 and Year 11 UK students.

What students face

  • Two papers of 1h 45m, 100 marks each
  • Core practicals, examined inside the written papers
  • Extended six-mark explanations
  • Data handling and unfamiliar contexts
How we teach it
  • Whole papers rehearsed to the clock
  • Each core practical worked through as an exam question
  • Six-mark answers built against Edexcel mark schemes
  • Recall practice in place of re-reading notes

AQA GCSE Biology Tutor

AQA GCSE Biology tutoring for specification 8461

  • Each required practical: method, variables, results, errors
  • Paper 1 content revisited while Paper 2 is being taught
  • Six-mark answers against AQA mark schemes
  • Past AQA questions and command-word technique

OCR GCSE Biology Tutor

OCR Gateway GCSE Biology tutoring for specification J247

We provide OCR Gateway GCSE biology tutor online, 1:1, for Year 10 and Year 11 UK students.

What students face

  • Two papers of 1h 45m, 90 marks each
  • Practical Activity Groups rather than a numbered list
  • Fewer marks on the paper, so each one counts for more
  • Foundation and Higher sat as separate papers
How we teach it
  • Linked explanation, which is where most OCR marks go
  • The practical activities worked through as exam questions
  • Timed practice on OCR’s own papers
  • Tier-appropriate content, once the school has decided
The subject

What Does GCSE Biology Cover?

Two written papers, and no coursework. The topic split below is AQA’s; Edexcel and OCR divide the same content differently, which is why lessons follow your child’s own specification.

Paper 1

  • Cell biology: prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, cell specialisation, microscopy and magnification, mitosis and the cell cycle, stem cells, and diffusion, osmosis and active transport
  • Organisation: cells to tissues, organs and systems, enzymes and digestion, the heart, blood vessels and blood, health and disease, and plant tissues and transpiration
  • Infection and response: pathogens and communicable disease, human defence systems, vaccination, antibiotics, drug development and monoclonal antibodies
  • Bioenergetics: photosynthesis and limiting factors, the uses of glucose, aerobic and anaerobic respiration, metabolism, and the response to exercise

Paper 2

  • Homeostasis and response: the nervous system and reflexes, the endocrine system, control of blood glucose, the menstrual cycle and contraception, the kidney, and the brain and the eye
  • Inheritance, variation and evolution: DNA and the genome, meiosis, genetic inheritance and Punnett squares, inherited disorders, sex determination, variation and evolution, selective breeding and genetic engineering, and fossils and classification
  • Ecology: adaptations and interdependence, sampling and quadrats, the cycling of materials, decomposition, biodiversity and human impact, trophic levels and food security

Questions

FAQs

How much does a GCSE biology tutor cost?

Richmond Tutoring charges £36 for a 60-minute 1-to-1 GCSE Biology lesson. The first 45-minute demo lesson is free, with no placement fee and no contract. That is the same rate as every other subject and level we teach, and you pay lesson by lesson.

How do students improve on six-mark biology questions?

By answering the question that was asked, in linked steps, using the right terms. These questions are marked on whether the explanation is complete and joined up rather than on how much is written, so a long answer that states facts without connecting them scores poorly. We practise them weekly against real mark schemes from your child’s own board.

How much maths is in GCSE Biology?

At least 10% of GCSE Biology assessment assesses mathematical skills, the smallest share of the three sciences. It is mostly data handling: percentages, ratios, means, magnification and reading graphs and tables. If the maths underneath is the real problem, GCSE maths tutoring runs at the same rate.

How is GCSE Biology examined?

Two written papers and no coursework. On Pearson Edexcel (1BI0) and AQA (8461) each paper is 1 hour 45 minutes and worth 100 marks; on OCR Gateway (J247) each is 1 hour 45 minutes and worth 90 marks. Practical work is examined inside those papers and is worth at least 15% of the marks.

Can you help a child working at grade 4, 5 or 6?

Yes, and it is the most common place we start. In biology the content is usually known and the marks are going on how it is written down. We work from a marked paper to find which question types are costing marks, then practise those specifically.

Can you help my child aim for a grade 9?

Yes. The top grades are won on precision, on linked multi-step explanation and on the unfamiliar contexts the hardest questions are set in, rather than on covering more content. Lessons move to whole papers under time, with every dropped mark accounted for.

What is the difference between Triple Biology and the biology in Combined Science?

Triple Biology is a GCSE of its own, with extra topics and more depth than Combined Science covers. Combined Science covers the same core biology as part of a double award. We teach both, at the same rate.

Should my child sit Foundation or Higher tier biology?

It depends on the target grade. Foundation runs from grade 1 to grade 5; Higher runs from 4 to 9, with a narrow miss allowed at 3 and a U below that. Higher papers carry content and question types that never appear at Foundation. Schools make the entry decision, usually during Year 11.

Can a tutor help with required practicals online?

Yes. The practical work is carried out at school; the exam tests students’ understanding of the methods, observations, variables, data and conclusions. AQA sets 10 required practicals for GCSE Biology, Edexcel calls its equivalents core practicals and OCR organises them into Practical Activity Groups. We work through each one as the exam asks about it.

Is an online GCSE biology tutor available near me?

Yes. Every lesson is online and 1-to-1, so an online GCSE biology tutor is available wherever you are in the UK — there is no travel and nothing depends on how far you live from us.

Most of the families we teach are in and around south-west London, and we also teach students across the rest of the UK.
