Why us

Why Richmond Tutoring for KS3 Maths?

Every child starts somewhere different. We build the tutoring around their gaps, goals and progress.

A maths plan built around your child

KS3 Maths covers a lot of ground, and a small gap in one topic makes the next one much harder. We work out where your child is actually getting stuck — fractions, algebra, equations, geometry or something else — then build lessons around their schoolwork, current level and pace.

The maths actually makes sense

At KS3, maths starts moving beyond straightforward calculations. Your child needs to understand why a method works and know when to use it. We work through the reasoning behind algebra, ratios, percentages, graphs and geometry so they are solving problems rather than simply copying steps.

The learning shows up in their results

The aim is for your child to feel the difference when they sit their next school test. We practise the skills they need to work accurately, explain their reasoning and tackle unfamiliar problems, while building the mathematical foundations they will rely on throughout GCSE Maths.

Where we come in

What Does a KS3 Maths Tutor Help With?

Each KS3 student and their parents have different expectations. These are the most common ones we help achieve.

My child has fallen behind and I do not know where it started.

Catching up

We find how far back the gap goes — often two years further than the topic causing trouble today — and close it from there, in order. Bring whatever school set this week — homework is often the fastest way to see where the understanding stops.

She says she is just not a maths person.

Building confidence

Confidence starts to return when a child can finish a hard question without help. One-to-one matters here: nobody is watching, and no question is too small to ask.

He does fine until the test, then it falls apart.

School assessments

Schools set their own KS3 assessments and use them to group students. We work on the topics those assessments actually test, and on finishing a paper calmly.

He can do the method but not the worded questions.

Problem solving

Problem solving is a core part of KS3 maths. Students learn to tackle multi-step questions where the method is not immediately obvious and has to be chosen.

She is doing fine, but she could be doing better.

High achievement

A different job again: extending beyond what the class is doing, working on reasoning and proof-style questions, and building depth rather than speed.

I want him ready for GCSE, not scrambling in Year 11.

GCSE foundations

Securing the algebra, number and reasoning that GCSE assumes, while there is time to do it without a deadline in the way.

Year by year

KS3 Maths Tutors for Years 7, 8 and 9

Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 are three different jobs. What a tutor works on changes with each one.

Year 7 Maths Tutoring

Secondary school brings new concepts, new expectations and a faster pace.

Year 7 maths tutoring goes back to the KS2 work the new course quietly assumes — fractions, decimals, percentages, negative numbers — and makes it automatic before algebra is built on top of it.

Then a Year 7 maths tutor teaches each new topic in the order the class meets it, so nothing is missed and nothing is rushed.

  • The KS2 gaps, found by marking real work
  • Fractions, decimals and percentages made automatic
  • Algebra taught properly the first time

Year 8 Maths Tutoring

Year 8 is where understanding has to turn into fluency.

Year 8 maths tutors work on the topics students find hardest — algebra, equations, ratio, geometry and probability — until a method is reliable rather than half-remembered.

It is the year to secure the Year 7 foundations, because Year 9 will assume every one of them.

  • Algebra, and the equations built on it
  • Ratio, proportion and the geometry that uses them
  • Problems that need more than one topic at once

Year 9 Maths Tutoring

Year 9 is the bridge between KS3 and GCSE maths.

Year 9 maths tutoring closes what is still open from Key Stage 3 and starts on what GCSE takes for granted: fluent algebra and harder multi-step problems.

Some schools begin GCSE content here and others finish KS3 first, so we follow your child’s own sequence.

  • Key Stage 3 consolidated, gap by gap
  • Algebraic fluency, before GCSE assumes it
  • Multi-step problems and the reasoning behind them

KS3 Maths Tuition That Delivers Measurable Progress

26%average improvement in assessment scores

KS3 has no national exam, so we measure progress against your child’s own school assessments and the work we mark in lessons — where a student started with us, against where they are now. It is an average across our KS3 students.

What Does KS3 Maths Curriculum Cover?

Key Stage 3 is the first three years of secondary school in England — Years 7, 8 and 9, typically ages 11 to 14. It covers the mathematical knowledge and skills students need before moving on to GCSE.

In England, KS3 follows the national curriculum, rather than a GCSE exam-board specification. Schools organise that curriculum into their own schemes of work, so the order in which topics are taught differs from school to school. We follow your child’s school curriculum and adapt lessons to what they are learning in class.

For students elsewhere in the UK, we follow their school’s curriculum and year group in the same way.

There is no national end-of-KS3 maths exam in England. Schools use their own assessments and classwork to monitor progress. Our lessons work alongside that system, focusing on the areas your child needs to understand and improve.

The KS3 maths curriculum includes:

  • Number: fractions, decimals, percentages, negative numbers, powers and roots, factors and multiples, standard form, accuracy and estimation
  • Algebra: expressions, simplifying, expanding and factorising, equations, inequalities, sequences, coordinates, graphs
  • Ratio & Proportion: ratio, direct proportion, scale, rates, percentages, proportional reasoning
  • Geometry & Measures: angles, properties of shapes, transformations, area, perimeter, volume, constructions, coordinates
  • Statistics: averages, charts, tables, graphs, data interpretation
  • Probability: probability scale, experimental probability, theoretical probability, combined events
  • Problem Solving & Reasoning: multi-step problems, mathematical reasoning, explaining methods, applying concepts to unfamiliar questions

What it builds

Building the Foundations for GCSE Maths

KS3 is a stage in its own right. Get it right and GCSE readiness follows, rather than the other way round.

Students who develop strong mathematical foundations during Years 7 to 9 enter GCSE maths with a stronger base to build on.

KS3 does not need to feel like a race towards GCSE. It is the time to get the fundamentals right.

Questions

FAQs

What is KS3 maths?

KS3 maths is the maths taught in the first three years of secondary school. In England it follows the national curriculum rather than an exam-board specification, and it covers number, algebra, ratio and proportion, geometry and measures, probability and statistics, alongside mathematical fluency, reasoning and problem solving.

What years are KS3?

Years 7, 8 and 9 — ages 11 to 14. Key Stage 3 ends at the close of Year 9, when most schools move into the GCSE course.

What does a KS3 maths tutor do?

A KS3 maths tutor works one to one with a student in Years 7 to 9, finds the gaps underneath whatever is going wrong now, and teaches the topics their school is covering in the order the school is covering them. At KS3 there is no exam to coach for, so the job is understanding and confidence rather than exam technique.

Does KS3 maths have an exam board?

No. In England, KS3 follows the national curriculum and each school writes its own scheme of work from it, so the order of topics differs from school to school. That is why we ask what your child is covering in class right now. For students elsewhere in the UK, lessons are adapted to their school’s curriculum and year group.

How much does a KS3 maths tutor cost?

£36 for a 60-minute 1-to-1 lesson, the same as every other level we teach. There is no placement fee and no contract — you pay per lesson and can pause whenever you like. The first 45-minute lesson is free.

How do I find a good KS3 maths tutor?

Judge any tutor, including us, against the same list: do they teach secondary maths every week rather than all subjects to all ages; can they diagnose the underlying gap rather than re-explain tonight’s homework; do they know the national curriculum and adapt to your child’s school; do they tell you what happened after each lesson; and does your child actually respond to them. The last one is the only one you cannot check on a website, which is why the first lesson here is free.

Is online KS3 maths tutoring effective?

For this age group it works well, provided it is genuinely one to one. A shared whiteboard shows the working appearing in real time rather than a finished answer, the lesson is recorded so it can be watched back, and there is no travel either side. What matters more than the format is whether the tutor diagnoses the gap or simply helps with homework.

My child was good at maths in primary school. What changed?

Usually the pace and the abstraction. KS3 moves faster than KS2 and introduces algebra, where a letter stands for a number and a method has to be reasoned out rather than remembered. A child who got through primary maths by being quick and careful can stall the first time that happens. It is extremely common and it is fixable.

Can a KS3 maths tutor help with GCSE preparation?

Yes. GCSE assumes the KS3 algebra, fractions and ratio are already automatic, so a gap left at KS3 costs marks for the next three years. That said, KS3 is a stage in its own right — the aim is understanding the maths properly, with GCSE readiness as the consequence rather than the purpose.

Is KS3 maths tutoring available near me?

Yes. Every lesson is online and 1-to-1, so KS3 maths tutoring is available wherever you are in the UK — there is no travel and nothing depends on how far you live from us.

Most of the families we teach are in and around south-west London, and we also teach students across the rest of the UK.
