Why us

Why Parents Choose Richmond for GCSE Physics Tutoring

What we do differently in physics, whether your child takes it separately or inside Combined Science.

Truly personalised GCSE Physics tutoring

We start with where your child actually is: their GCSE exam board, Foundation or Higher tier, year group, current topics and the areas costing them marks in physics. Then we build the tutoring around those gaps — whether that means rearranging equations, interpreting circuit diagrams or getting to grips with forces and energy.

We make the physics make sense

Physics at GCSE becomes much easier when your child can picture what is happening, rather than reach for a memorised formula. We work through the reasoning behind forces, energy transfers, circuits, waves and particles, so they understand which equation to use, why it works and what the answer actually means.

Understanding that turns into marks

Knowing physics is only half the job. GCSE questions rarely stop at recalling a fact. Your child needs to apply equations, handle units, interpret unfamiliar situations, explain practicals and show enough working to earn every available mark. We use real exam questions and mark schemes to turn their understanding into answers that score.

Where we come in

What Does a GCSE Physics Tutor Help With?

Most parents do not arrive looking for a GCSE physics tutor. They arrive with a sentence about their child. These are the ones we hear most.

He understands the theory but loses calculation marks.

Understand the theory, lose the calculation marks

They know what the equation means but struggle to select, rearrange or apply it. We work on those three steps in order, with the units carried through and the working shown, because that is where the method marks are.

She finds physics harder than biology or chemistry.

Find Physics harder than Biology or Chemistry

The maths and the unfamiliar problem-solving make Physics feel much less predictable than the other two. We make the pattern visible: most questions are a small number of shapes wearing different clothes, and we practise recognising which one is in front of them.

He is stuck around a grade 5 and cannot move.

Stuck around grades 4–6

They understand the basics but need stronger exam technique and application to move further. We work from a marked paper: which question types are costing marks, and what a full-mark answer to each one looks like.

She needs a 7 or above for A-Level.

Aiming for grades 7–9

The top grades need precision, multi-step reasoning and consistent performance on the harder questions. That is a different plan from catching up, and we build it differently — on the long questions, the unfamiliar contexts and the marks that are there for the taking.

Physics is dragging her Combined Science grade down.

Physics inside Combined Science

Physics is one part of your child’s overall Combined Science result, so weaknesses in Physics can pull down their overall performance. We identify the topics and question types costing them marks and focus lessons where they will make the biggest difference.

Who we teach

  • Foundation and Higher sat as separate papers
How we teach it
  • Method marks: the substitution, the units, the final line
  • The practical activities worked through as exam questions
  • Timed practice on OCR’s own papers
  • Tier-appropriate content, once the school has decided
The subject

What Does GCSE Physics Cover?

Two written papers, and no coursework. The topic split below is AQA’s; Edexcel and OCR divide the same content differently, which is why lessons follow your child’s own specification.

Paper 1

  • Energy: energy stores and transfers, work done, power, efficiency, conduction and insulation, and national and global energy resources
  • Electricity: current, potential difference and resistance, series and parallel circuits, I–V characteristics, domestic electricity and the national grid, and static electricity
  • Particle model of matter: density, internal energy, specific heat capacity, specific latent heat, and particle motion in gases
  • Atomic structure: the model of the atom, radioactive decay and nuclear radiation, half-life, contamination and irradiation, and nuclear fission and fusion

Paper 2

  • Forces: scalars and vectors, contact and non-contact forces, resultant forces and free-body diagrams, moments, pressure, speed and acceleration, Newton’s laws, stopping distances, elasticity and momentum
  • Waves: transverse and longitudinal waves, wave speed, reflection and refraction, sound and ultrasound, the electromagnetic spectrum, lenses and black-body radiation
  • Magnetism and electromagnetism: permanent and induced magnets, magnetic fields, electromagnets, the motor effect, induced potential and transformers
  • Space physics: the life cycle of a star, orbital motion, and red-shift and the Big Bang

Questions

FAQs

Is my child given the physics equations in the exam?

Yes. Students are provided with the required equations in the exam under the current GCSE arrangements, and Ofqual has confirmed this continues for the lifetime of the current GCSE Physics and Combined Science specifications. Your child does not have to memorise them. The challenge moves to knowing which equation to use, rearranging it correctly, handling units and applying it to unfamiliar problems.

How much maths is in GCSE Physics?

At least 30% of GCSE Physics assessment assesses mathematical skills. That includes calculations, rearranging equations, units, significant figures, ratios and graphs, and the AQA specification sets out those mathematical requirements explicitly. If the maths underneath is the real problem, GCSE maths tutoring runs at the same rate and the two work well together.

How is GCSE Physics examined?

Two written papers and no coursework. On Pearson Edexcel (1PH0) and AQA (8463) each paper is 1 hour 45 minutes and worth 100 marks; on OCR Gateway (J249) each is 1 hour 45 minutes and worth 90 marks. Practical work is examined inside those papers and is worth at least 15% of the marks.

Can you help a child working at grade 4, 5 or 6?

Yes, and it is the most common place we start. At that point the understanding is usually there and the marks are going on exam technique and application. We work from a marked paper to find which question types are costing marks, then practise those specifically rather than revising everything again.

Can you help my child aim for a grade 9?

Yes. The top grades are won on precision, multi-step reasoning and consistency on the harder questions rather than on covering more content. Lessons move to long multi-step problems, unfamiliar contexts and whole papers under time, with every dropped mark accounted for.

What is the difference between Triple Physics and the physics in Combined Science?

Triple Physics is a GCSE of its own, with more content and more depth, and space physics appears on it where some Combined Science specifications leave it out. Combined Science covers the same core physics as part of a double award. We teach both, at the same rate.

Should my child sit Foundation or Higher tier physics?

It depends on the target grade. Foundation runs from grade 1 to grade 5; Higher runs from 4 to 9, with a narrow miss allowed at 3 and a U below that. Some content, including the more demanding calculations, appears only on Higher papers. Schools make the entry decision, usually during Year 11, and we will give you an honest view from your child’s recent work.

Can a tutor help with required practicals online?

Yes. The practical work is carried out at school; the exam tests students’ understanding of the methods, observations, variables, data and conclusions. AQA sets 10 required practicals for GCSE Physics, Edexcel calls its equivalents core practicals and OCR organises them into Practical Activity Groups. We work through each one as the exam asks about it.

How much does a GCSE physics tutor cost?

Richmond Tutoring charges £36 for a 60-minute 1-to-1 GCSE Physics lesson. The first 45-minute demo lesson is free, with no placement fee and no contract. That is the same rate as every other subject and level we teach, and you pay lesson by lesson.

Is an online GCSE physics tutor available near me?

Yes. Every lesson is online and 1-to-1, so an online GCSE physics tutor is available wherever you are in the UK — there is no travel and nothing depends on how far you live from us.
