Why Richmond

Why Parents Choose Us for Biology

Biology is examined on explanation, not memory. We find where your child’s marks are actually going, and build the lessons around it.

  1. A biology specialist

Your child is taught by someone who teaches biology every week, on their own specification — not a general science tutor working a page ahead of the syllabus.

  2. The process first, the facts second

Facts learned without the process underneath are the first thing to go under exam pressure. We teach what is actually happening in the cell, the body or the ecosystem, so the facts have something to hang on.

  3. Answers that earn the marks

Biology marks are given for precise, ordered explanations. Every week we practise the longer written answers and the data questions against the board’s own mark schemes.

  4. Try a full lesson first, free

The first lesson is a real 45-minute class and you can sit in. A short note follows every lesson after that, there is no contract, and if we do not think we can help, we will say so.

FAQs

How much does a biology tutor cost?

Richmond Tutoring charges £36 for a 60-minute one-to-one online biology lesson, at GCSE or A-Level, with no contract or placement fee. The first 45-minute lesson is free.

Does my child need a biology tutor?

Usually when one of these is true: they know the content but the marks do not follow, longer written answers keep coming back half-marked, the data and practical questions cause panic, or a good GCSE grade has turned into a disappointing Year 12 one. If you are not sure, book the free demo class. If we do not think your child needs lessons, we will tell you.

My child revises hard for biology. Why are the marks still low?

Usually because biology is revised as facts and examined as reasoning. Mark schemes reward a precise explanation, in the right order, with the right terms — and more and more of the marks go on applying the biology to an experiment or a situation the student has never seen. We teach the idea behind each fact, then practise writing it the way the mark scheme wants it.

How much maths is there in biology?

Less than in chemistry or physics, but it is fixed: at least 10% of the marks in both GCSE Biology and A-Level Biology use maths, a floor set by Ofqual. That is percentages and rates, magnification, graphs and, at A-Level, statistical tests such as chi-squared. Students who are otherwise strong at biology often lose these marks, so we practise them in context.

Can biology be taught well online?

Yes, because the part that is examined is on paper. Students carry out the practicals in school, and the written papers then ask about the method, the variables and the data. Diagrams, processes and data analysis all work very well on a shared whiteboard, and every lesson is recorded so revision is just watching it back.

Which courses and exam boards do you teach?

GCSE Biology on Pearson Edexcel (1BI0), AQA (8461) and OCR Gateway (J247), and A-Level Biology on AQA (7402), OCR Biology A (H420), OCR Biology B: Advancing Biology (H422) and Pearson Edexcel Biology A: Salters-Nuffield (9BN0) and Biology B (9BI0). Our focus is the UK specifications, but we teach International GCSE too. We don’t teach International A-Level or IB.
