KS3 science is one subject in most schools, built on a few big models — particles, cells, forces, circuits — and the working-scientifically skills of fair tests, tables and graphs. There is no national exam, so a gap can go unnoticed until the end-of-year test sets the GCSE groups.

At GCSE most students take Combined Science, worth two GCSEs on one double grade, or Triple Science, three separate GCSEs. Either way it means four to six papers in Year 11 across three subjects, each with its own practicals, calculations and six-mark questions.

Up to GCSE, science is three subjects taught and often graded as one. We look across all three, find the one costing marks, and teach the links between them.
At school, science is often split between two or three teachers, each seeing part of the picture. One science tutor sees the whole picture, spots that the weak science is physics, not “science”, and moves the lessons there.
Energy, particles and rates turn up in biology, chemistry and physics under different names. Teaching the idea properly once, and showing where it reappears, is faster than learning three versions of it.
Questions about practical work and maths skills carry a guaranteed share of GCSE science marks. We practise both inside the science your child is studying, from Year 7 onwards.

Many students who struggle in science are really struggling with the maths inside it. We teach both, at the same rate, and can tell you which one to start with.
Ofqual requires a minimum share of GCSE science marks to test maths skills: at least 20% in Combined Science, 10% in Biology, 20% in Chemistry and 30% in Physics. Rearranging an equation, converting units, standard form, percentages and reading a gradient all appear in science papers, and a student who is shaky on them loses marks in both subjects.

Yes, because the part that is examined is on paper. There is no practical exam in GCSE science: students do the experiments in school, and the written papers then ask about the method, the variables and the results. Explaining, calculating and analysing all work very well on a shared whiteboard, and every lesson is recorded.
