Why us

Why Families Choose Richmond for GCSE Maths

Three things we do differently across Year 10, Year 11 and the resit.

A GCSE maths plan built around your child, not a template

We begin with your child’s exam board, year and Foundation or Higher tier. Then we look at where they are actually struggling — the topics, question types and gaps that are holding them back — and shape their GCSE maths tuition around that. It is never a one-size-fits-all approach.

We Make GCSE Maths Click

From algebra and geometry to ratio, statistics and problem solving, we make difficult GCSE maths topics easier to understand and remember. Students learn why methods work, then practise using them in exam questions.

Understanding that shows up on results day

Once the maths makes sense, we take it into real GCSE exam questions. Your child learns how to set out their working, pick up method marks and handle unfamiliar questions, so their understanding shows in their results.

Who we teach

GCSE Maths Tutoring by Exam Board

Your child’s exam board changes how we prepare them.

Pearson Edexcel GCSE Maths Tutor

Edexcel GCSE Maths tutoring for specification 1MA1

Edexcel GCSE Maths has three 80-mark papers, with Paper 1 taken without a calculator.

We use Edexcel’s question style and mark schemes to shape how your child practises GCSE Maths.

Lessons focus on:

  • Edexcel question stylelearning how to approach the way Edexcel asks questions
  • Non-calculator skillspreparing specifically for Paper 1
  • Algebra and core methodsmaking essential techniques accurate and reliable
  • Longer and multi-step questionsworking through problems where the method is less obvious
  • Edexcel mark schemeschecking working and method marks, not just the final answer

AQA GCSE Maths Tutor

AQA GCSE Maths tutoring for specification 8300

AQA GCSE Maths has three 80-mark papers, with Paper 1 taken without a calculator. Any topic can appear on any paper.

So we prepare your child for the AQA exam, not just the GCSE Maths syllabus.

Lessons use AQA past papers and mark schemes alongside your child’s current level to focus on:

  • AQA question stylerecognising what a question is asking
  • Non-calculator mathsbuilding fluency before exam season
  • Method marksshowing enough working to earn the marks available
  • Unfamiliar questionsapplying known methods to problems they have not seen before
  • Full-specification practicebecause any topic can appear on any paper

OCR GCSE Maths Tutor

OCR GCSE Maths tutoring for specification J560

OCR GCSE Maths has three 100-mark papers. The non-calculator paper comes second in the sequence — Paper 2 for Foundation and Paper 5 for Higher.

That paper structure is part of how we prepare your child for OCR.

Lessons focus on:

  • OCR question styleunderstanding how OCR frames problems
  • Non-calculator Paper 2 or 5practising the skills needed for that paper
  • OCR mark schemeslearning how working translates into marks
  • Multi-step questionschoosing and applying the right method
  • All three papersbuilding exam readiness across the complete OCR structure

GCSE Maths Tuition That Delivers Measurable Progress

11grade 9s in GCSE maths since 2024

Grade 9 is the top grade at Higher tier. Grade 5 is the top grade at Foundation. Our students have taken both.

Year by year

GCSE Maths Tutors for Year 10 and Year 11

Year 10 is about building the GCSE foundations. Year 11 is about turning the whole course into exam-ready knowledge.

GCSE Maths Tutoring for Year 10

A Year 10 student is still learning a large part of the GCSE course. We use their schoolwork and regular practice to find gaps early — whether that is algebra, fractions, equations, graphs or geometry — before those gaps make later GCSE topics harder.

We focus on:

  • Finding and fixing gaps from KS3 and early GCSE Maths
  • Getting secure with algebra and core GCSE methods
  • Keeping pace with the school’s GCSE scheme of work

GCSE Maths Tutoring for Year 11

By Year 11, the focus shifts to the full GCSE Maths specification. We use classwork, topic tests and mock papers to find exactly where marks are being lost, then target those areas rather than making your child revise everything again.

We focus on:

  • Analysing mock papers question by question
  • Identifying the GCSE topics and question types costing marks
  • Building speed and accuracy across full GCSE papers
Foundation or Higher

GCSE Maths Foundation & Higher Tier Tutoring

When your child starts GCSE Maths, their school decides whether they take Foundation or Higher tier. Foundation is graded 1–5, while Higher is graded 4–9. The tuition changes with the tier.

A maths classroom, with a calculator, compasses, a protractor and the four operations drawn on the board.

GCSE Maths Foundation Tier Tutor

Make the GCSE Maths basics secure.

We focus on the methods your child needs to answer questions accurately and consistently. That includes finding gaps in areas such as number, fractions, percentages, ratio and algebra, then practising them through GCSE questions until they become secure.

The aim: stop losing marks on questions your child should be able to answer.

A maths classroom, with the quadratic formula, a cubic graph, an integral and a sphere drawn on the board.

GCSE Maths Higher Tier Tutor

Go beyond the basics to reach the higher grades.

Your child needs the core GCSE Maths skills too, but Higher also brings harder algebra, quadratics, trigonometry, vectors and more demanding problem-solving. We work on these alongside multi-step and unfamiliar questions, so your child can handle the level of thinking needed for higher grades.

The aim: turn strong GCSE Maths knowledge into Grades 7–9 marks.

The curriculum

What Does GCSE Maths Cover?

AQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR cover the national GCSE Mathematics subject content used in England, with differences in specification structure, assessment and question style.

The GCSE maths curriculum includes:

  • Number: fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, standard form, surds, bounds, estimation
  • Algebra: expressions, equations, inequalities, sequences, simultaneous equations, quadratics, graphs, functions

  • Probability: tree diagrams, Venn diagrams, conditional probability, relative frequency
  • Statistics: averages, cumulative frequency, box plots, histograms, scatter graphs, sampling

Questions

FAQs

How do we find the best GCSE maths tutor for our child?

Look for four things, whoever you choose. A tutor who teaches GCSE maths every week rather than all subjects to all ages; one who works on your child’s own specification and its past papers; and published results with the method shown. Then ask for a free lesson before you pay for anything — a GCSE maths tutor for UK students is only the right one if your child will actually work with them, and you only find that out by watching one lesson.

How much does a GCSE maths tutor cost?

£36 for a 60-minute 1-to-1 lesson, at Foundation or Higher tier and on any of the three boards. There is no placement fee and no contract — you pay per lesson and can pause whenever you like.

Foundation or Higher tier — which should my child sit?

Every student sits all three papers at one tier, and the school makes the entry. Foundation is graded 1 to 5 and caps there; Higher runs 4 to 9, with an allowed 3 for a student who falls just short. Higher is not automatically the better choice — a student who would scrape a 4 on Higher often gets a more secure 5 on Foundation. But students planning to take A-Level maths will normally need to study Higher tier. We give parents an honest view of which tier suits their child’s current level and target grade.

Is Year 10 too early for a GCSE maths tutor?

No. Year 10 is a good time to start GCSE maths tutoring. It gives a tutor time to find the gaps left from KS3, keep pace with school, and build exam technique before Year 11.

It is also the year families most often talk themselves out of. There is still room to go back and fix the algebra and ratio the course is about to lean on, which is far harder in Year 11 with mocks in the way.

Is it too late to get a tutor in Year 11?

No. Plenty of students start in Year 11. The work is different by then — past papers, method and exam technique rather than re-teaching the course — and it starts from the marks the student is actually dropping rather than from the syllabus.

Can a tutor get my child from a grade 3 to a grade 4?

It is the most common thing we are asked for. For many students aiming to move from grade 3 to grade 4, securing marks on the core topics matters more than chasing the hardest questions — but the tutor should find where the marks are actually being lost before deciding what to teach. After the free demo class we will tell you honestly whether we think it is reachable in the time you have.

Can you help a strong student get a grade 9?

Yes. Our students have taken 11 grade 9s in GCSE Maths since 2024. At that level the marks go at the back of the paper, on multi-step and proof questions where the method has to be chosen rather than recalled, so that is what the lessons practise.

What grade can GCSE maths tutoring realistically get my child?

It depends where they are starting, and we will say so honestly. The top grade is a 9 on all three boards, and our own published GCSE maths results include 11 grade 9s since 2024. After the free demo class we will tell you what we think is reachable in the time you have, including when we think a grade is not.

My child has to resit GCSE maths. Do you teach that?

Yes, at the same rate. A GCSE maths resit tutor works to a grade 4 rather than through Year 11 again. Without a grade 4, the 16 to 19 condition of funding means your child carries on studying maths at college, and the college decides when to enter them — there is no rule that they sit every series. Resit lessons are built around a grade 4 rather than around doing Year 11 again.

Is a GCSE maths tutor online available near me?

Yes. Every lesson is online and 1-to-1, so a GCSE maths tutor online is available wherever you are in the UK — there is no travel and nothing depends on how far you live from us.

Most of the families we teach are in and around south-west London, and we also teach students across the rest of the UK.
